Defeating Childhood Obesity

Obesity is one of the leading causes of heart disease in the United States and it is problem that is not only plaguing adults, but is appearing among the youth of the country as well. Studies have indicated that those who are obese during their childhoods have a much greater chance of being obese into their adulthood, increasing their risk for experiencing a heart attack or stroke.  Thankfully, there are a number of ways that parents can combat childhood obesity to improve their child's chance for long and healthy life.

Perhaps one of the biggest hurdles facing parents who would like to help their children get on the right track to good health, is to change lifestyle behaviors.  The technology that we have all come to love and appreciate has meant that children are spending most of their waking hours in front of a screen of some kind, whether it is their video games, television shows, movies, or computer.  Encouraging children to spend more time outdoors and engaged in physical activity is necessary to promote optimal health.  Start by limiting the number of hours a day that your child can be glued to a screen of any kind, and stick to it.   If you are having a difficult time getting your child motivated, try enrolling him or her in a class that might be interesting. Perhaps taking up kung fu, ballet, or baseball will inspire more activity.

You also need to focus on getting your child to eat right. Set a limit for your family as to how many meals in a week will be spent eating out and remain strict about it. Keep mealtime nutritious and enjoyable by being creative in the kitchen and introducing new foods to try as a family. When your child sees that a healthy lifestyle can be fun, you'll meet with much less resistance and gain a fit kid.
